The XEMC Gets a Glow-Up: Smarter, Safer, and Easier to Handle

Electromagnetic calorimeters, like the XEMC on the H8 beamline, are specialized detectors used to measure the energy of particles by absorbing them and converting their energy into a visible signal. These tools are essential for our operation team to understand the particle composition of their beams and have been used a lot in the past few years for this purpose. And now, the XEMC is getting an exciting upgrade that makes it safer, easier to handle, and ready to tackle new challenges. Let’s take a closer look!
Why the Change?
For years, the XEMC relied on a horizontal actuator to move it in and out of the beam. This movement was crucial since the detector performs destructive measurements: while in use, it absorbs the beam almost entirely, leaving nothing for downstream experiments or test beams. Once beam commissioning is completed, the XEMC needs to be quickly moved out of the beam. The motorized actuator allows this to be done with a simple click in the control software, avoiding manual intervention by our technical team.
While functional, it had its quirks – most notably, the protective frame stayed stationary. This meant the entire 65 kg detector had to be dismantled whenever a vacuum pipe needed installation. Imagine a team squeezed into the tight tunnel of the H8 beamline, where the XEMC is installed, working like a precision pit crew under less-than-ideal conditions. The need for a smarter, more efficient system was kind of obvious.
A New Vision: Vertical Movement
That’s why we had the idea of an upgrade: The XEMC will soon sit on a telescopic pillar, moving up and down instead of side to side. This simple but important change eliminates the horizontal actuator, frees up space, and makes handling the detector a breeze.
The old support is being replaced with a custom-built base, and the protective frame has been upgraded with Bosch Rexroth profiles and a sleek aluminum roof. Bonus points: the top plate doubles as a handy work surface when the XEMC is in its OUT position.
Safety at the Core
The upgrade doesn’t just focus on convenience – it’s also about safety. The XEMC will now operate in two defined positions:
- IN Position: For precise beam alignment.
- OUT Position: Aligned with the downstream support table.
Limit switches ensure smooth and accurate movement, while an anti-collision mechanism keeps the detector (and its surroundings) safe. A red safety bar locks everything securely in place, giving peace of mind to everyone involved.

This upgrade isn’t just about improving functionality – it’s about making life easier for the people who work with the XEMC day in and day out. By eliminating the need for heavy lifting and simplifying operations, the new system ensures the XEMC can perform its role with greater efficiency and reliability. Whether it’s supporting beamline studies or contributing to preparing new experiments, the XEMC support is now smarter, safer, and better equipped than ever.
