Tailored to Fit: How 3D Printing Makes a Difference

In our workshop, the new Prusa XL 3D printer has been quietly transforming the way we approach challenges in design and prototyping. Replacing the aging BCN3D, this machine has quickly proven its value by delivering reliable, high-quality results for parts that directly support the critical work of our group.

3D printing plays a crucial role in addressing practical challenges. For instance, storing the new mirrors for the Cherenkov detector required a fast, tailored solution. These delicate mirrors needed to be stacked in boxes without their coated surfaces touching. Antonio designed custom supports to cradle the mirrors securely, and with the help of the Prusa XL, we printed over ten supports efficiently. The mirrors are now safely stored, ready for future use.

The printer’s adaptability has also expanded our material options, including carbon fiber and tungsten-filled filaments. Although not yet meeting CERN standard requirements, it holds promise for applications like radiation shielding in the future – a key consideration for many of our projects at CERN.

With the Prusa XL, we’re equipped to tackle unique requirements and deliver precise, reliable solutions. Whether you need a custom design or a one-off prototype, feel free to share your design file (CATIA/STEP), and let’s explore how we can bring your ideas to life.
