Decorating Your Christmas Tree, BE-EA Style

Still scratching your head about how to decorate your Christmas tree this year? Why not take some inspiration from BE-EA’s cutting-edge engineering? After all, nothing says holiday cheer quite like the vibrant color patterns of Ansys Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Yes, you heard that right—science meets seasonal sparkle!

Sometimes these colorful patterns are used for design validation, sometimes to troubleshoot unexpected challenges, or even to optimize an old, quirky vacuum chamber. But let’s be honest, they’d also look pretty fantastic hanging on your tree.

Take the T4 TCC2 (North Area), where we’ve been designing a new configuration for LS3. To achieve the required beam quality, a continuous vacuum from the giant VXSS vacuum chamber to the XTAX T4 is essential. The result? A long, oblong chamber concept – think “holiday ornament meets engineering marvel.” But this wasn’t without challenges. Atmospheric pressure on this unique shape causes major stress and deformation, meaning we had to carefully choose thicknesses and add reinforcements. And what’s the secret sauce? FEA, of course!

But that’s not all. In November, during the ion run, the cooling system for the XTAX H2 was turned off due to a water leak. This beam absorber is crucial for protecting equipment and personnel, so even though it handles low-energy beams, a multiphysics FEA was a must. With input files from Geant4 or FLUKA simulations, the resulting thermal maps revealed a beautiful spectrum of temperatures—perfectly festive, wouldn’t you agree?

Looking ahead, we’re also working on a new XTAX design to safely absorb the highest-intensity beams, benchmarking models with SY-STI to optimize materials and cooling configurations.

And the Christmas spirit doesn’t stop there! We’re tackling another challenge with the new flange design for aluminum vacuum windows. FEA revealed some high stress levels, so in early 2025, a Digital Image Correlation test in collaboration with EN-MME will show us how the simulated stresses compare to the real deal. Let’s see which “Christmas tree” stands the test!
